Matt and Kim’s new album proves to be underwhelming

[vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_column_text]It’s going to be summer soon, and along with a wave of heat, it brings a surge of new, upbeat  pop music. Matt and Kim appear to be of the indie persuasion, but their recent album “New Glow” proves they are much more than that. It was hard to get a sense of where the drums and keyboard came in with all of the computer manufactured music. I enjoyed listening to this album for the instrumental part and less of the singing portions. This eccentric duo is formed by lead singer and keyboardist Matt Johnson and drummer Kim Schifino.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_column_text]Their earlier albums give off a homemade, laidback vibe. “New Glow” proves to be more energetic and purposeful. With a repetitive chorus and obnoxious beats, this album steered itself towards the category of party music. While I understand that they are transitioning to a new type of music, I expected it to be a lot less screechy and pitchy. Johnson mostly sounded like his typical self, but in some of the songs, like “Not Alone” and “I See Ya,” he sounded like a whining ferret.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_column_text]One song I particularly enjoyed was “Get It.” It is catchy and definitely something I could see myself dancing to in the summer.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_column_text]A redeeming quality of this album was its unique and upbeat tempo. All of the songs gave off a happy, lighthearted vibe and they successfully captured the essence of summer pop. Overall, I enjoyed the “do it yourself” theme of the album, and Matt and Kim’s quirky personas which shine through their upbeat, happy songs.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/2″][image_with_animation image_url=”2278″ animation=”Fade In” img_link_target=”_self”][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/2″][tabbed_section][tab title=”Pros”][vc_column_text]

  • Unique take on pop music
  • Fun, catchy songs

  • Lacking vocals
  • Songs sounding the same
