Procrastination situation

Procrastination+situation

[vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_column_text]In this digital age we have the world at our fingertips. The wide range of available technology should increase efficiency and decrease the amount of time needed to accomplish a task. Why, then, do so many people struggle to get work done in a timely manner? Some people would argue that the inability to complete work is due to laziness alone, but I disagree.

What I have noticed recently, through talking to teachers, parents, and peers, is that there are many factors that contribute to the tendency of procrastination. The main factor seems to be stress. As expectations are made higher, people must constantly work harder to do well. An enormous amount of pressure is being put on people, specifically students, every day. If a human being is pressured enough, they will either do their best work, or just shut down entirely. It is said that whatever doesn’t kill you will make you stronger. While I am sure that motivates many, it doesn’t motivate me. There is no guarantee that you will get stronger. I am all for challenging myself, but we are only human, and there are things that will kill us. We are not as indestructible as some would like to believe, and overwhelming levels of stress are starting to push people past their breaking points. Quite often, when people delay doing an assignment, it is because they are experiencing too much stress and do not think they can handle completing the task.

For some, perfectionism makes it nearly impossible for them to ever do anything well enough. The fear of not completing a task to perfection will sometimes lead people to not do it at all. We live in a world full of competition, with people constantly looking to be the best. Somewhere along the way, people stopped wanting to be “the best,” and started wanting to be “perfect.” I wish I could remove the word “perfect” from human vocabulary, but I do not have that kind of power. Despite my complaints about perfectionism, even I am guilty of it from time to time. I know from experience that wanting everything to be done perfectly usually leads me to panic about it, and then just not do it. Teachers are always saying that students should at least attempt the work, because a bad grade is better than a zero. That is true, but a bad grade means you couldn’t do it, whereas a zero means you didn’t try. I definitely do not recommend taking the zero-we really should always at least try. While I don’t advocate using stress or perfectionism as an excuse for not getting work done, I do believe they are major issues. I think that right now, people are pretending to handle it. Some make jokes about how behind they are on all of their work, others avoid talking about it completely. There are also those who are behind on their work because they are actually just lazy. Whatever the reasons, if something isn’t done about the procrastination situation, people may not be able to handle it (or pretend to) for much longer.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
