Chocolate mousse for dummies

Chocolate is my favorite dessert, so as soon as I saw this recipe for an easy chocolate mousse online, I couldn’t wait to try it. Usually when there are too many steps or ingredients in a recipe, I get overwhelmed, but that wasn’t the case. The recipe required basic ingredients and minimal cooking skills, which was the second best part. The first best being eating it, of course.

All I needed was:

  • 2/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 1/8 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 3 cups whole milk
  • 4 large egg yolks
  • 1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 6 ounces bittersweet chocolate, chopped
  • 1/2 teaspoon unsweetened cocoa powder

First, mix together the sugar, cornstarch and salt in a medium saucepan. Then, stir in ⅓ cup of milk to form a paste. Next, whisk in the egg yolks and the remaining milk. Cook the mixture on medium heat and stir it constantly until it becomes thick. I cooked it for about 13 minutes. Take the pan off the heat and add the vanilla and chocolate. Once the chocolate is melted and the mixture is smooth, pour it into any small container and set it in the refrigerator for two hours. I ended up with six bowls of mousse.

I was surprised by how simple this dish was to make. Although it’s a beginner version of mousse, it tastes just as good. It’s something that you can whip up on the fly and is a crowd pleaser because, come on, who doesn’t like chocolate?

This is the final product. The mousse was the perfect balance between sweet and bitter.
