As soon as Thanksgiving ended, I got into the holiday spirit. I hurried to my local grocery store to stock up on hot chocolate for those cold winter nights. After drinking hot chocolate at least twice a week, I decided to shake things up. I’d heard of frozen hot chocolate but I didn’t understand the science behind it. After finding this recipe, I realized it was simpler than it looked.

All I needed was:

  • 6 Hershey’s snack size chocolate bars
  • 1 and ½ cups of milk
  • 2 tablespoons of hot chocolate mix
  • 1 and ½ tablespoon of sugar
  • 3 cups of cubed ice

First, I broke the chocolate into pieces and threw it into a bowl, which was sitting over simmering water. Once the chocolate was melted, I added the sugar and hot chocolate mix, stirring to form a paste. I took the mixture off the stove and slowly poured in half a cup of milk, stirring constantly. After the liquid had cooled down, I added it to the blender which contained the ice and remaining milk. Lastly, I turned my blender on high and stopped blending when the drink acquired a slush-like consistency.

I was surprised to find that the drink was actually frozen, because I expected the ice to melt into the drink by the time I was done blending everything. Thankfully, the frozen hot chocolate turned out exactly as it was supposed to, and it only took me a total of 15 minutes to make about two tall glasses. Not to mention, it added a fun twist to a common wintertime drink. If you’re looking for a cold drink, besides a frappuccino or an iced coffee, frozen hot chocolate is for you.

This was the final product. The drink, surprisingly, stayed frozen for longer than I expected.
