I’ve discovered my new favorite dessert, and it’s called flan. After my last post, I couldn’t decide what to write about next, so, naturally, I asked around for inspiration. That’s when a friend recommended I try to make flan. Immediately, I went to Google in search of a recipe.

Making flan is surprisingly easy. All you need are three eggs, a cup of sugar, a can of sweetened condensed milk, a can of evaporated milk and a teaspoon of vanilla extract. First, in a medium sized saucepan, melt the sugar down to a brown liquid. As soon as you take it off the stove, pour the sugar into a medium sized, oven safe dish and rotate the dish so the sugar can coat it fully. While that cools down, beat the eggs, evaporated milk, condensed milk and vanilla extract on low speed until a smooth mixture is formed. Next, pour the egg and milk mixture into the dish, cover with aluminum foil and bake it at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for an hour.

I like almost anything sweet, but flan has captured a special place in my heart. I love how flan is fluffy and dense at the same time, so it doesn’t feel like you’ve eaten a ton when you actually have. Also, flan is aesthetically pleasing. The cream color of the flan contrasts with the caramel color of the reduced sugar to create art. Although it takes a while to bake, flan consists of very simple, everyday ingredients. All in all, I was really impressed that someone as inexperienced as me could make flan and have it look exactly as it did in the pictures online.

This was the final product. It tasted better than it looked.
