The broadcast’s initial attraction is the host and senior editor Kai Ryssdal. His voice is booming and his sarcastic humor is refreshing, especially for a show about finance.

However, no one on Marketplace is an economist. Unlike other programs that air on the radio, Marketplace is unique in that it was created for regular people. Ryssdal hosts the show in a manner which he states his mother could even understand.

“When I write, I’m not writing for the Wall Street types, even though they do listen … I’m not writing for PHDs and economists,” Ryssdal said. “I’m actually writing for my mom because I figure if I can get my mom to understand what the sub-prime mortgage mess is about, then I can get anybody to understand it.”

About half-way through the 30 minute segment they “do the numbers,” including the daily ups and downs of the Dow Jones Industrial average, the Nasdaq and the S&P 500. Though to someone uninformed about the stock market, the numbers are arguably the least interesting part of the show. The best part comes after. The figures are later broken down and explained, but not in the form of a lecture. Instead, reporters take the statistics and show the effect they have on the economy in the form of a personal story. In about two minutes the journalists share the life of a person, a life that was transformed in an instant, all because one number changed.

The show always ends on a lighthearted tone with a random final note, making each episode a memorable journey into the Marketplace.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_text_separator title=”Marketplace Schedule:” title_align=”separator_align_left”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_column_text][milestone symbol_position=”after” color=”Extra-Color-1″ number=”6″ subject=”Every weekday on 90.1 FM (central time/ local station)” symbol=”:30 p.m.”][/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_text_separator title=”Similar programs:” title_align=”separator_align_left”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_column_text]
