Going green and eating clean

[vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_column_text]My family’s venture into clean eating was definitely interesting. At first, I was beyond excited. Juice cleanses and vitamin supplements were gaining popularity, and I didn’t want to miss out on the trend. Although I looked forward to this major lifestyle change, I knew there would be a few obstacles along the way.

I had several worries, but my biggest fear was the fact that I had to cut back on eating out. Like many American families, mine tends to be busy most days of the week, and fast food is often our best option. A clean eating plan meant protein shakes, fruit smoothies, and home cooked meals. If we absolutely had to eat out, we would check the lighter, healthier options on the menu. One day we came across a restaurant called LYFE Kitchen, also known as Love Your Food Everyday. Since this place offers nothing but healthy food, it quickly became a favorite. Upon first entering the restaurant, I discovered two things that immediately made the place likeable: a variety of menus, and a water bar. At the water bar, a variety of waters was available, including chilled, sparkling, cucumber mint, and many other flavors. LYFE Kitchen has a total of five menus, including one with gluten-free options and another with vegan and vegetarian choices, along with a water station where diners could choose from an assortment of waters. While the prices are a little higher than other restaurants, I enjoyed not having to put a ton of effort into finding healthy food.

Since I could not go to LYFE Kitchen for every meal, I had to find other things to eat. An important part of clean eating is lessening portion sizes. Rather than eat three large meals each day, I would have three small meals with nutritious snacks in between. This led to me being a little less ravenous at meal times. Finding snacks that are both healthy and delicious is quite a challenge. Some snacks are simple and yummy, like fresh fruits and granola. Other foods, such as kale, might not be the best choice for someone just starting out on a clean eating regimen. Since finding snacks that are not only great tasting but also good for your health can be a challenge, I’ve provided information on some of my favorite “clean things” from the last year.[/vc_column_text][divider line_type=”Small Line”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_column_text]Fresh Fruits

Fruits and vegetables make excellent snacks. Depending on how you prepare them, they can make for a snack that is quick and delicious. Fresh produce can be eaten alone, or even added to a smoothie or a juice.

A child at heart, I will always love a good juicebox; that said, as refreshing as they are, juice boxes are not exactly the healthiest option out there. Juicing fruits and vegetables every morning is time consuming, but it can definitely be worth the effort. The tricky part of DIY juice is finding out which combinations don’t taste horrible. When it comes to juicing, you can’t hesitate to branch out. Your juicing creations won’t always be amazing, but you just might stumble upon your new favorite drink. Tip: If you make a juice and enjoy it, write down exactly what you put in it.

After extensive research done by nutritionists and other experts, it is no real surprise that water is not only healthy, but necessary. People often mistakenly believe they are hungry, when really they may just be thirsty. If you start to feel hungry, drink a glass of water and wait about fifteen minutes. Even if it turns out that you were in fact hungry, you will at least have gotten about an eighth of your recommended daily water intake.

It can be fun and rewarding, but also difficult. For those interested in exploring healthier food and experiencing a bit of a challenge, clean eating may be the way to go.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
