Scream Queens: Who will die next?

The long awaited series premiere of Scream Queens has finally arrived with spoiled sorority sisters, red devils, wannabe Kappas and a candle blogger.

Scream Queens begins with a flashback to a Kappa Kappa Tao house party in 1995, where a sorority member gives birth in a bathtub to a baby she didn’t even know she was pregnant with.

Kind of a concerning and odd way to start the show, don’t you think? Reminds you of an episode of “I Didn’t Know I Was Pregnant.” Because of this opening, I started to believe the entire show would go downhill.

But what happens next? This girl’s so called “sisters” find her in the bathtub with her baby and their reactions are cringe-worthy. These girls were “mean girls” taken way too far: Their attitude towards the whole situation left me astonished and I think I might’ve lost a bit of faith in humanity. Soon after the harsh comments saying how the party had been more important than the birth of her baby were thrown to the new mother, she bleeds out to death… But in the style of the horror genre, she isn’t the only one to die in this two-hour premiere.

The show cuts back to the present world of 2015; there’s a new clique ruling over Kappa Kappa Tao. First we have the queen of the posse, Chanel Oberlin (Emma Roberts), followed by her minions, Chanel #2 (Ariana Grande), Chanel #3 (Billie Lourd), and Chanel #5 (Abigail Breslin). Why there isn’t a four? No one knows- not yet at least. Problems arise when anti-Kappa Cathy Munsch (Jamie Lee Curtis), the dean of the school, decides to open Kappa to the public, allowing whichever student of Wallace University to join. The Chanels are not at all pleased with the girls who wish to join the sorority, amongst them a candle blogger named Jennifer (Breezy Eslin), a deaf girl who constantly sings Taylor Swift named Tiffany (Whitney Meyer), a girl with scoliosis named Hester Ulrich aka “Neck Brace” (Lea Michele), a girl with a genius IQ named Zayday Williams (Keke Palmer), and a Kappa Kappa Tao legacy named Grace Gardener (Skyler Samuels).

A group of oddballs like these infuriates the original Kappa’s, thinking it would ruin the entire legacy of the sorority to allow these strange people in. So, to try and scare them away, they put these “losers” through a little thing called “Hell Week”- which definitely was “hell” for those wannabe Kappas.

The conflict within the story, aside from the annoying whines and cries of spoiled girls, is the killer, dressed as the Red Devil roaming around campus committing several murders throughout the episode. Essentially the show is a ‘whodunnit’ with a touch of cliche comedy and purposefully horrible acting.

I will admit I had many laughs during the show due to the stupidity of characters and the situations. It was a different kind of show and a pretty insane collaboration – mixing the comedy of Glee with the horror of American Horror Story. There were moments that made me cringe and reevaluate my choice of putting on the show in the first place. But other moments kept me entertained and made me at least consider keeping up with the show. Now, I don’t know for sure if I will keep up with it, but I have at least considered it.

When I first heard about Scream Queens, I was so excited and just couldn’t wait for the show to come out. But, when it did last Tuesday, I was disappointed. I had high expectations for the show and to me they just weren’t met. There were some parts that I did enjoy and had a few laughs, but the base of the concept just wasn’t working for me. I turned on the T.V. to Scream Queens hoping it was going to be great, but when the show came to an end, I found it to be a let down.
