Awards season is something I always look forward to. Whether it’s the Oscars, the Golden Globes, the Game Awards or the Emmys, I always tune in live to watch the best in entertainment media receive recognition for their accomplishments.
2024 was a great year for movies, television and gaming, but the year is overshadowed by what’s to come. Because 2025 is shaping up to be a staggering year for entertainment, here’s 10 things to look forward to as we get into the new year.
Dispatch
During the 2024 Game Awards, “Dispatch” was announced — a star-studded workplace comedy game where you manage an office of misfit superheroes. The game is notable for featuring several prominent actors such as “Breaking Bad” star Aaron Paul, as well as Laura Bailey, Jeffrey Wright and plenty others.
The game uses voices from famous content creators, such as JackSepticEye and Moistcr1tikal. “Dispatch” has no set release date for the year, but the game can be wishlisted on Steam for PC.
Nintendo Switch 2 games
One of the most iconic gaming consoles of the 21st century is finally getting its well deserved sequel. Released in 2017, the Nintendo Switch offered a unique twist on consoles by making it infinitely portable with a docking station for a bigger screen. The concept remained unique, but the Switch still came with its fair share of design flaws that Nintendo is looking to perfect in its predecessor.
For now, we can confirm from the first teaser that the Nintendo Switch 2 will have a larger display with a stronger kickstand and bigger Joy-Cons that connect side-to-side, as opposed to up and down. With this, Nintendo also teased an upcoming “Mario Kart” game.
Invincible Season 3
Just as promised, Amazon Prime Video is ramping up its release schedule for the highly anticipated superhero series “Invincible.” The show centers around college student Mark Grayson, who is learning the ropes of becoming a proper hero when his father, the most respected hero on earth, turns out not to be who he seems.
The first three episodes are set to release Feb. 6 with episodes spanning until March 13. Following the amazing cliff hangers left off in season two, I cannot wait to see what’s next in the world of “Invincible.”
Ghost of Yotei
After five years, a reboot sequel to the infamous samurai fighting game, “Ghost of Tsushima,” has finally been announced. “Ghost of Yotei” is set to follow a brand new warrior who fights her way through the snowy mountain of Yotei in feudal japan. The game takes place over 300 years later from the original, so despite keeping the art style similar, Sucker Punch Studios seems to be planning on changing the atmosphere of the game.
Not much else is known about the upcoming game, but a trailer with breath-taking animation was released earlier last year. A release date announcement can be expected sometime in the near future.
Squid Game season 3
Just as the recent popularity from “Squid Game” season two dies down, Netflix has already built it back up amongst fans by announcing their plans for a third season later this year. The Korean show follows Seong Gi-Hun, a man drowning in debt who signs up for a game show style competition with hundreds of others before realizing everything is not what it seems.
After keeping their momentum with the first season, the second released Dec. 26 of last year. It includes a second competition that offers new games and more story development, with ratings just as high as the original. No teasers or trailers have been released for season three, but it has been confirmed as the final season to the show.
Captain America: Brave new world
“Captain America: Brave New World” is set to follow the first major events of Sam Wilson as he takes over as Captain America. The movie will introduce acclaimed actor Giancarlo Esposito as the Sidewinder, a character whose inclusion in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is long overdue. The movie is directed by Julius Onah, which will make this his first ever Marvel movie, scheduled for release Feb.14.
The MCU seems to be renewing the production method of taking quality over quantity, as seen by “Deadpool & Wolverine,” its only major film to release in 2024. The momentum from that movie, as well as “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3,” will hopefully start a streak of well throught-out adaptations reminiscent of the first two phases of the MCU. Given the inconsistencies of the recent Marvel movies, “Captain America: Brave New World” will make or break phase five of the MCU.
A Minecraft Movie
Following the theme of video game movie adaptations, Minecraft seems to be throwing its hat into the ring with “A Minecraft Movie,” releasing April 4. The film follows a group of people as they entrap themselves into the Minecraft universe where they meet Steve, the only person who knows his way around the world.
This movie doesn’t seem incredibly deep or thought-provoking, but rather a silly adaptation to a game that’s been a part of everyone’s childhood. I can’t wait to see Jack Black’s performance in this, especially after his role as Bowser in the “Super Mario Bros.” movie in 2023.
F1
Formula 1 (F1) has been slowly immersing itself into the United States, where it has finally been mainstreamed due to success from the ongoing Netflix documentary “Drive to Survive.” Fans of the sport may have noticed the recording of a movie that had been happening throughout the 2024 season.
The movie follows American racer Sonny Hayes, as he comes out of retirement to challenge the grid for the World Drivers Championship. The movie has already been seen including real life events from this past racing season with real life racers showing up as themselves for the film, which releases June 27.
Elden Ring: Nightreign
“Elden Ring” changed the world ever since its release in 2022, which earned it “Game of The Year” for its take on a souls-like game. The action role-playing game eventually earned a well deserved Downloadable Content (DLC) early last year before finally getting a proper sequel announced for consoles.
“Elden Ring: Nightreign” is going to have an alternative take on the original. Several different mechanics are more reminiscent of a multiplayer battle royale game with some boss battles thrown in. The animation looks similar, but the actual gameplay looks to be something that’s never been seen before.
Now You See Me 3
“Now You See Me 3” is looking to reboot, competing with modern day action movies as the group of illusionists once again dive into the world of organized crime. It’s been a decade since the original films’ release and, since then, the heist thriller theme has gained a massive following.
Shows like “Money Heist” and “Kaleidoscope” have taken influence from the previous two films, and with great casting picks, everyone behind the movie have said they feel confident in this long-awaited installment, which releases Nov. 14.
