The theater’s varsity show “The Old Man and The Old Moon” is a uniquely adventurous show, unlike any I have seen before.
”The Old Man and The Old Moon” follows The Old Man, whose job is to refill the moon with light after his wife sets off for adventure. His wife leaving leads him to embark on a treacherous journey to find her, which involves large storms and strange creatures such as a giant fish and perplexing people. These adventures are the main focus of the show, but the overarching theme is love, change and time.
The show was fun and full of adventure. It was clear the cast was passionate. The sets were rustic, old and everything was stacked on top of each other, giving it a unique look. The 360 set makes you feel like you are experiencing the story with them.
The lighting was dark and dramatic, and while it was hard to take photos, it was a cool experience as a part of the audience. Different corners of the set were highlighted with spotlights during different scenes and putting the audience in the moment, which felt amazing.
The cast’s dedication was clear the moment they stepped foot onto the platforms, but senior Yohann Abraham and junior Ronit Gollapudi stole the show. Gollapudi played the main character– The Old Man – and embodied him wonderfully. I loved his solo moments because I felt immense empathy for him. Additionally, the comedic moments were delivered with perfection, and gave slight relief to the serious moments throughout the play. Abraham played Llewelyn, and his facial expressions were on point. I almost forgot he was playing a character.
The only complaint I have for the show is how hard it is to follow. At times, it’s chaotic and scatterbrained, though part of the charm, which made it harder to follow the storyline.
“The Old Man and The Old Moon” was a fun and endearing show that put me back into my creative, child-like mindset. It resonates emotionally while giving the audience the chance to laugh. It was an amazing show that everyone should get the chance to experience.
