15 ways to read more

15+ways+to+read+more

[vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_column_text]When asked if they enjoy reading, most people reply with something along the lines of “I don’t have time” or “Does my history textbook count?” It doesn’t have to be like this. Here is a list of 15 tangible things you can do on a daily basis to find what to read, when to read and ways to read.

What to read

It can be hard to find the right fit for you. Instead of simply not reading, try different ways to find the perfect match.

  1.       During block lunch, go to the library and peruse different genres and titles to find one that sparks your interest.
  2.       Check out Goodreads. By creating a free account, you can rate the books you’ve read previously to get recommendations on what to read, from your added friends or whatever the site generates for you.
  3.       Explore your favorite author’s website for related titles or new authors.
  4.       If you don’t read because you find it boring or too difficult, ask the librarian for book recommendations.
  5.       For a better look at a plot summary to make sure you will enjoy the book, check out Kirkus Reviews.

When to read

Despite a busy schedule that’s loaded with extracurricular activities and homework, there are always avenues to find a time to read.

  1.       Instead of checking your phone when you get to class early, pull out a book and read a chapter.
  2.       On days you don’t have copious amounts of tutoring or club meetings, find a quiet place and read during block lunch.
  3.       At the end of a test, instead of rehashing the answers in your head, take a mental break and pull out a novel.
  4.       Wrap up your homework 15 minutes before you go to bed for a detox period of reading.
  5.       Set a specific time in your day to read, even if it’s just a few minutes it will radically change your monotonous lifestyle.

Ways to read

For some people, reading for pleasure is anything but pleasurable. However, there are unique ways to read to add the pleasure back into reading.

  1.       If you drive home, download an audiobook from various websites to listen to while you sit in traffic.
  2.       Use the Little Libraries in school to your advantage – grab a book on the way to class.
  3.       Check out the free books on iBooks to read on your mobile device during downtime at school.
  4.       While working out on a machine, like a treadmill or elliptical, set the book in front of you to speed-read.
  5.       To motivate yourself, set a goal to read a certain amount of books in a week, month or year, and once completed reward yourself with something.
