He couldn’t stand the recorder.
Junior Nigel Gudgeon didn’t enjoy the recorder in 4th grade, but was still compelled to try out for every instrument in middle school and soon, the high school band. He said his outgoing and spontaneous energy was part of what landed him the drum major position, which he will become next school year.
Out of all the instruments Nigel tried out for in 5th grade, his favorite was the trumpet. He joined the Killian band in sixth grade for fun, but started losing interest after COVID-19. Nevertheless, he continued throughout middle school and was even less motivated to continue in high school. He had trouble choosing between tennis and band, but ended up doing both his freshman year. He said he enjoyed band more when he started practicing more often and making new friends in the program.
During Nigel’s sophomore year, he became a student leader in the loading crew, which he continued this year. The loading crew does the heavy lifting for the band by moving equipment onto the truck before and after performances and rehearsals. Nigel has always been interested in becoming an officer, but realized he could be just as influential as a drum major.
Nigel decided he wanted to be a drum major a month into the audition process. He said the current drum majors are a big inspiration to him, especially senior Ashley Chapman because of her involvement on the varsity tennis team. Since tennis tournaments happen throughout the band season, Nigel had to figure out how to balance a schedule between the two. Even though it’s more responsibility, he still plans on being a part of the varsity tennis team next year.
He said he wants to lead the band in a fun way while still being a good role model for others to look up to. He said what sets him apart is his high energy and positive behavior. He hopes his role in the band doesn’t affect the dynamic of his relationships.
He plans to join the band in college, and is currently considering Oklahoma State and Texas Tech University. He’s still figuring out his career plan, but wants to maintain his musical and tennis skills. Nigel said that he’s most excited to have the rest of the drum major team working with him this coming season.
