Orchestra will perform its fall concert Oct. 15 at 7 p.m. in The Colony High School’s auditorium. This is their first concert of the year.
“When people think of orchestra,” head director Matthew Cautivar said. “They think of Mozart, Beethoven and classical composers. We [perform] that music, but we also [perform] a variety of other music. We want to shock the audience with the music that we’ve chosen.’”
In past years, the orchestra’s first concert was their cluster concert. The cluster concert features orchestras from feeder middle schools. Because the auditorium is closed for renovations, they did not have a cluster concert this year.
“It’s a little nerve-racking for us,” junior Elizabeth Ejo said. “[We’re] changing environments to someplace that we don’t see often. With [our] auditorium, we already know the roots and where to put everything.”
The orchestra’s theme for this year is “The Journey.” The orchestra has been preparing for the concert by developing their skills through warm ups and exercises with a focus on Etudes.
“For some students, it’s their senior year,” Cautivar said. “Their high school journey is almost over. For ninth graders, they just got here, they’re at the beginning of that journey. Sometimes the journey is crazy, and sometimes it takes us in different directions.”
The concert orchestra will open with “Crazy Train” by Ozzy Osbourne, followed by “Clocks” by Coldplay. The symphonic orchestra will perform “Two Scenes from the Sleepy Hollow” inspired by The Sleepy Hollow.
“All of them are playing very challenging music,” Cautivar said. “The emphasis and focus of our rehearsals is bringing everyone together to work as a team.”
The philharmonic orchestra will perform “Golden” from the movie “K-pop Demon Hunters,” followed by “Lion City,” a piece about Singapore. The concert will conclude with the chamber orchestra performing “Mendelssohn’s 12th Symphonia” and “Dvořák’s String Serenade.”
“I want to prove we can make it through the pieces [at] a faster tempo,” junior Lauren Park said. “[I’m looking forward to] the song we’re playing [that] comes from the hit movie, ‘K-pop Demon Hunters.’”
Students who qualified are auditioning for All-Region Oct. 13, the Saturday before the fall show. The orchestra plans to travel to Los Angeles, Calif. as a group this year.
“Drilling and running through the pieces is exciting,” Ejo said. “[Playing] as if we’re performing our concert, is exciting — it shows we’re really preparing for our actual performance.”
