Pitch Perfect: A Cappella wins spot at state music association

[vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_column_text]The varsity choir A Capella was selected to perform at the Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA) on either Feb. 12 or 13 next year by the TMEA board. Head director Rachel Forester and assistant director Nathan Ratliff submitted recordings of all the choirs and next year’s A Capella choir was selected anonymously to attend and perform 25 minutes of selected music at the convention.

“First, I was afraid, I was petrified,” Forester said. “Seriously I felt elated, excited for the students, and nervous all at the same time.  It is quite an honor for the Hebron Choir Department, and with that comes the responsibility of preparing an amazing concert worthy of the honor.”

According to Forester, performing at TMEA is one of the highest accomplishments a Texas high school choir can receive. Out of about 50 recordings submitted from Texas high school choirs, only two mixed choirs, treble choirs and men’s choirs may be selected.  Forester increased all the choir’s chances at being selected for TMEA by recording the songs again at a concert after the initial recording at UIL. The choir members staying before or after school for sectionals, sight reading every day in class and practicing the songs with a sharp eye for detail made all the choirs better and led to A Capella being selected for TMEA.

“It’s so exciting knowing that our hard work does pay off,” sophomore A Capella member Jessica Harper said. “It’s one of the highest honors a choir can receive. It also shows people that Hebron has a choir worth being proud of, especially considering it’s our first year entering.”

Forester said the directors are already preparing for the convention by listening to possible songs to make sure they fit the choir and TMEA’s style. The choir will work toward the TMEA convention by preparing earlier than typical school concerts.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
