Pressures Faced

[vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_column_text]

Pressure. We’ve been facing it every day since a young age, and we’re still facing it now.

The pressures we encountered when we were in elementary school were simple. Maybe something like our friends making us choose who to play with at recess, or when a bully began to target you and you had no idea whether to leave it alone or to be known as a tattletale.

Back then, those were the hardest things we had to face, the things that tormented our young, innocent minds.

Back then, we had no idea the kind of pressures we would be facing today. Our pressures are becoming more difficult to handle and having a much stronger impact on us.

That’s how I’m feeling right now. I constantly feel like I’m walking around carrying 10,000 pounds on my back. It isn’t just one type of pressure I’m carrying around either – it’s multiple and I know I’m not the only one who’s facing educational pressures, peer pressures or social pressures. I’m constantly feeling the need to change my ways and change who I am to simply be good enough.

For educational pressures, students feel the need work harder than they can handle. We’re given this awful idea that if we make a mistake on some assignment or test, then there’s no future for us. We overwork ourselves and stress ourselves out to be the perfect student.

For peer pressures, your friends have a big influence on you. Whatever they do encourages and tempts you to do the exact same thing, even if you know you shouldn’t. And at those times you might give in and you’ll feel awful for doing something you know you shouldn’t have done.

As for social pressures, society has created this idea of the “perfect person” who is just that- perfect. As human beings, it is very impossible to be the perfect person, yet it’s what we strive to be. You have those telling you who to be and how to act, and acting out differently gets you shunned from the public eye. You end up turning yourself into another person, a person you don’t want to be, but someone that everyone else want from you.

It shouldn’t be like that. Pressures shouldn’t have such a grand effect on who you are as a person. Pressures shouldn’t have to shape you and make you push yourself to do things you aren’t comfortable with.

Instead, we should be telling each other to simply do our best and know that it’s enough. We should tell each other “if you aren’t comfortable that’s fine.” We should tell each other to just be who we are.

We should tell each other that it’s OK to be human.
