The boys soccer team will play Flower Mound on Feb. 11 at 7:30 p.m. at Brian Brazil Stadium.
Despite the Hawks recent run, illness and injuries continue to plague the squad. With much of the team’s attacking core unavailable, head coach Mathew Zimmerman said he will have to give the younger players a chance to prove themselves.
“ We haven’t had a chance to have our full lineup on the field [this season,]” Zimmerman said. “ Our back line is basically all seniors, maybe one underclassman, but it just happens that our upperclassmen are sick and hurt up front, so that opens up a lot of chances. These younger kids are playing well enough, they’re going to make it very difficult for these seniors to be able to work their way back into the lineup.”
While both teams are tied against each other, with four wins each, since 2019, the Hawks are currently third in district standings and Flower Mound is in sixth. The Hawks’ are on a three-game winning streak, which Zimmerman said will be a key factor.
“ It’s the last game before the district bye week and I know that our guys want to go out on a four game winning streak,“ Zimmerman said. “ If we catch [Flower Mound] on the right night, then [we] can kind of put our stamp on the game, [and] play the way we want to play, rather than their style.”
Flower Mound is coming into the game with a 2-7-2 record, and Hebron’s record is 7-2-2. Zimmerman said taking advantage of Flower Mound’s recent performance is crucial.
“This is a transition year for them,” Zimmerman said. “[They have] a lot of freshmen and sophomores playing, and so with those young players that are lacking in experience, if [we] put a little adversity on them, they can lose their confidence quickly.”
