The baseball team will play its final district home game against Flower Mound at Hawk Field at 7 p.m. on April 22. The Hawks are third in the district with a record of 8-4, and Flower Mound is second with a record of 9-3.
“It’s been a roller coaster ride,” head coach Corey Farra said. “We’ve played good, [and] we’ve played bad. We’ve played healthy, [and] we’ve played hurt.”
This game will be the first of two against Flower Mound, as the team will end its district season at Flower Mound Field April 25. Last year, Flower Mound won both times the two teams faced off and won the district title, while the Hawks finished in second.
“With how the game went last year, we’re definitely going to be fired up,” third baseman Luke Sharp said. “[There will] be a lot of emotions, but so long as we don’t have too [many,] we’ll do fine. Having that right balance is going to be very important.”
The team suffered a five-game losing streak earlier this season, losing four combined district games against Marcus and Guyer, and one game against Grapevine. After losing the second time against Guyer, Farra brought up the concept of “the ship” — the phrase he said he wants the team to play by this season.
“I told them ‘The waters around us are shaky,’” Farra said. “‘We aren’t playing very well. What are we going to do to steady that ship?’”
Farra moved freshman Landon Bonner up to varsity to play shortstop for the second game against Guyer, as three seniors are out on injury. The team has won six out of the past seven games.
“Joining [during the losing streak] was difficult,” Bonner said. “But I just reminded myself to do my job and do my best. I didn’t want to do too much or be a hero; I just wanted to go out [and] play my game, and the rest of the team did the same.”
The Hawks clinched playoffs after winning their series against Braswell, 12-1 and 7-0. Sharp said this season is something he’ll never forget.
“You look back at your seasons and remember all the great memories you’ve made with your teammates,” Sharp said. “It motivates you to keep going — to make this season just as great. Whether I play [in college] or not, I’ll always remember these high school years.”
