[vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_column_text]One percent of the world’s population is diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)  3.5 million are Americans and 1 in 68 are children. My baby brother falls into that statistic.

At 5 years old, he’s behind most of his peers in terms of social and developmental skills, such as speaking in full sentences and using the restroom by himself. However, despite not being up to par with other kids, he is still very bright for his age; he is quite proficient in technology use, being able to do things even I cannot do and still getting his point across in broken sentences.

I’ve gotten used to unlocking my phone and finding a totally different theme installed, or looking through my computer’s photo gallery and finding screen recordings of Curious George from Netflix. If my family isn’t careful, the kitchen may end up littered with cheese wrappers and the pantry door curiously propped open with a chair. And naturally, the main suspect is little Hasnain, happily chewing away on cheese slices in front of the computer screen.

ASD is the fastest growing developmental disability, yet it is ignored by the general public who still upturn their noses in front of autistic children. Even the few government programs are inadequate for the care of these children.

Due to public derision of disabled people, 19.3 percent are actively employed or seeking work, and of those, 12.9 are unemployed. Majority of people with disabilities are more than able to work and be dependable employees, yet employers are misinformed about the reality of autistic people.

The importance of changing perspectives on disabled people may become the impetus for them to have the opportunity to lead normal lives. These people are dependent on us to carve their path by supporting organizations like Easter Seals who provide services to adults and children with disabilities.

My brother was diagnosed when he was two and half years old, and since then, he has displayed major improvement due to the care Easter Seals of North Texas. I have no doubt that within a few years, he will be out of the special education class and among his peers, possibly outsmarting the majority of them.[/vc_column_text][vc_raw_html]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[/vc_raw_html][vc_column_text]Without these organizations and the continued support by donations and charity, the future of autistic children is uncertain. ASD is an ongoing issue that has yet to make breakthroughs in terms of solutions and cures. Just like how there is breast cancer awareness month or drug-free week, an attempt to spread information about ASD should be made.

My belief is that if more people are aware of the realities of the lives of autistic and disabled people, there will be more of an effort to ensure that they receive quality care and the chance to be among society, so that more disabled people have the courage to find work and are motivated to succeed.[/vc_column_text][divider line_type=”Small Line”][vc_column_text]
