Staff Picks: Best movies of 2014

Staff+Picks%3A+Best+movies+of+2014

[vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_column_text]The year held both it’s share of oscar-winners and rotten tomato movies. Here is The Hawkeye’s staff favorites.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_text_separator title=”“Divergent“” title_align=”separator_align_left”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_column_text]From book to movie, “Divergent” made headlines with its Hunger Games-style, action-packed story line.  Although the movie is missing a few characters from the book, the other actors provide a successful distraction and shift the focus to the theme of individualism in society. While the captivating story pulls viewers in, the easy-to-follow plot makes it the best pick for 2014, so even movie lovers who haven’t read the book can enjoy the film.

Release Date: Mar. 21, 2014[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/2″][image_with_animation animation=”Fade In” img_link_target=”_self” image_url=”6567″][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_text_separator title=”“Captain America: The Winter Soldier”” title_align=”separator_align_left”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/2″][image_with_animation image_url=”6566″ animation=”Fade In” img_link_target=”_self”][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_column_text]Suspense. Suspense, suspense, suspense. Spoiler alert: This is an amazing movie. I can guarantee anyone who watches it will be gripping the ends of their seat the entire time. The acting is just incredible, the action unparalleled and one of the best plot lines I’ve ever seen. Need I say more?

Release Date: Apr. 4, 2014[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_text_separator title=”“The Amazing Spider Man 2”” title_align=”separator_align_left”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_column_text]Webs and flying and villains and love. What more could a great movie have? This movie perfectly balances action and interest with love and character development. Tears fell for sure at the heartbreaking ending, making this movie stand out among the others.

Release Date: May 2, 2014[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/2″][image_with_animation image_url=”6597″ animation=”Fade In” img_link_target=”_self”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_text_separator title=”“How to Train Your Dragon 2”” title_align=”separator_align_left”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/2″][image_with_animation image_url=”6568″ animation=”Fade In” img_link_target=”_self”][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_column_text]Dreamwork’s “How to Train Your Dragon” franchise is arguably one of their most successful. This year’s sequel was probably one of my favorite sequels ever made. Continuing from the end of the first installment, the characters are still the same ones that everyone loves. The plot of the movie is reimagined to fit the setting of the series, with heartwarming plot twists and new developments. Coupled with Dreamwork’s amazing animations and palettes, “How To Train Your Dragon 2” is the ideal family movie to capture hearts of children and adults alike.

Release Date: June 13, 2014[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_text_separator title=”“Guardians of the Galaxy“” title_align=”separator_align_left”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_column_text]This movie will keep you laughing from beginning to end. While there is mild language and is more for a more mature audience, I highly recommend it for a good laugh. It has something for everyone: There’s a lot of action and even a love story. Hands down, “Guardians of the Galaxy” is the movie of the year.

Release Date: Aug. 1, 2014[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/2″][image_with_animation image_url=”6569″ animation=”Fade In” img_link_target=”_self”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_text_separator title=”“November Man“” title_align=”separator_align_left”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/2″][image_with_animation image_url=”6570″ animation=”Fade In” img_link_target=”_self”][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_column_text]A bullet whizzes by at high velocity before you can process what is happening. Two bad guys lay dead on the floor. Pierce Brosnan is back at playing a well-scripted spy again but this time it isn’t for the British secret service. Brosnan delivers an action-packed movie that is sure to hypnotize you with a good old-fashioned spy story.

Release Date: Aug. 27, 2014[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_text_separator title=”“Big Hero 6”” title_align=”separator_align_left”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_column_text]”Big Hero 6″ is an impeccable blend of tragedy and good, wholesome Disney animation rolled up into one. This film also has what seems to be Disney’s first racially diverse cast, even featuring a Japanese-American protagonist. “Big Hero 6” gives a very accurate portrayal of a young teen going through hardship, making it immediately relatable and giving kids, teens and adults an unconventional hero to look up to. It’s like a perfect marriage between “Avengers” and “How to Train Your Dragon.” It’s worth the watch.
