Orchestra will perform their spring concert April 29 at 7 p.m. in The Colony High School’s auditorium. This will be their final concert of the school year with the theme being influenced by the group’s spring trip to California.
“Whenever we [perform] our spring concert, it’s a celebration of the whole year,” head director Matthew Cautivar said. “California is a musical journey, so I want to bring the audience with us.”
The group will perform “A Day at Disneyland,” “California Dreamin’” and “The Glory Days” from the movie “The Incredibles.” They are also playing the soundtrack to the film “La La Land” and rock music inspired by Southern California.
“It’s really beautiful to see the journey [the students] take from beginning to end,” Cautivar said. “They have improved a lot over the course of the year.”
The lineup will incorporate “From the Start” by Laufey as the senior song. All senior members of the orchestra voted on the piece and will come together to perform it.
“I tell [the seniors] at the beginning of the year that everything we do this year is the last time for [them],” Cautivar said. “We want the concert to be one last big moment for them to remember on their way out.”
In preparation for the concert, the group worked on vibrato practices, rhythmic patterns and bow tempos. At this year’s Solo and Ensemble Festival, 137 performers were awarded the “Superior” rating, which is the highest rating possible.
“Live playing tests [and having] to play in front of people really helped me develop my confidence and how I present myself in front of others,” senior violinist Jin Lim said.
This year, the orchestra set an enrollment record with the entire orchestra program having a total of over 180 students. This upcoming year, the incoming class will set another enrollment record.
“When we first started off, nobody was ever talking,” Lim said. “But now we all laugh together and have inside jokes. That’s what makes orchestra enjoyable. It makes me realize that it’s not all about trophies. It’s about the memories as well.”
