The boys wrestling team will be competing at state Feb. 13-14 at the Berry Center at 8 a.m.
Senior Alexander Barros is the only representative from the boys wrestling team competing at state. Barros will be competing in the 157 pound weight class.
“I always say I wrestle better when people are watching, especially loved ones,” Barros said. “I just want to complete all my goals that I have for myself, and I’ll be satisfied.”
This is head coach Eric Wilson’s first year as the head coach for the team. He said he is excited to experience the thrill and see Barros compete to his full potential.
“You have to dedicate yourself to it,” Wilson said. “He [has] dedicated his life and his whole mission to get to the state title. He got third last year and is still hungry to compete.”
Barros’ teammates and family will be alongside him during his matchups. Sophomore Makena Terril said he will be attending the state trip to help Barros practice at state.
“There’s no [renewal],” Barros said. “I can’t go back and do anything over again, [especially] with this being my last season.”
Last season, past seniors Jayden Sullivann, Mario Palomar and Christian Tianwjj along with current seniors Annalisa Afrifa and Barros competed at state.
“I’m excited for them,” Terril said. “They’ve got something to prove, and got to put in just as much work as me.”
The competition ended with Afrifa earning silver along with Barros’ bronze.
“I’m gonna compete at NAI. I had D1 offers,” Barros said. “The NAI program, it’s in Georgia, close to family, and they gave me a full ride scholarship where I don’t have to pay for any of my college, so that’s the angle.”
