People, when given the chance to apply, ignore the option to become an organ donor. With around 54% of people 18 years or older being registered donors, the percentage of young donors is probably lower. Every day, 17 people die waiting for an organ transplant that never arrives. This is problematic because anyone can be helping those in need, with certain exceptions. Everyone should become organ donors when they receive the opportunity to do so.

While the decision to become a donor may be a very long and thought-out decision, becoming a donor is the simplest part of the process. With many people being able to get or renew your permit or license, anyone can apply to become a donor. So whenever you go to get a permit or license, all you have to do is check the box and you will be an official organ donor.

According to a 2021 HRSA report, 106,857 men, women and children are on the national transplant waiting list. In 2020, 39,000 transplants were successfully performed. Organ donation is an important decision to make because there are so many people in need of donations. With every donor being able to save up to eight lives, even the donation of a kidney can exponentially improve someone’s life. You could change someone’s life from being restricted to a hospital bed to being able to live their life and see the world without any limitations.

Being a donor can improve your quality of life by knowing that you are doing something to help someone. It can give you the mindset to take nothing for granted, because it can all be gone in the blink of an eye. Not only does the donor get a better view on life, but the recipient of the donation does, too,ith them getting that second chance to live life with an all new view from their donation.

Becoming an organ donor may not be for everyone, but it can change someone’s whole world. With some people thinking doctors and staff will not try to save their life. In reality, the doctors and staff will put saving your life as their main priority over all else. The decision will always be there, so when you get the option, become a donor and save a life one day.
